Adding gift cards to WordPress and WooCommerce: plan the full journey

Plan gift cards for an existing WordPress or WooCommerce website, from the purchase page and digital delivery to staff redemption and customer support.

The short answer

You can add gift cards to an existing WordPress or WooCommerce website without treating it as a full website rebuild. First agree where customers buy, which system records the balance, how the card is delivered and how staff redeem it. Podium can add its gift card experience to the existing site; shared checkout and other integrations need their own confirmation.

What to take from this guide

  • A link, an embedded experience and a shared WooCommerce checkout are different arrangements.
  • Use one agreed balance record and rehearse partial redemption with staff.
  • Test the customer journey and the support process before promoting the gift card.

1. Start with the website you already have

A customer who knows your venue should be able to find the gift card without learning a different brand. Review where a Gift cards link belongs in your menu, which page explains the offer and how someone returns to it on a phone.

Our digital gift card service explains how Podium Cards can be added to an existing WordPress or WooCommerce website. The exact connection should be agreed with the person responsible for the site. You do not need to assume that selling gift cards requires replacing the rest of the website.

2. Be precise about what integration means

An existing website might send a customer to a branded gift card shop or display an agreed purchase experience within the site. A gift card product that uses a shared WooCommerce basket is a different requirement. Ask which arrangement is being proposed before comparing costs.

Do not assume that existing discount codes, loyalty rules or payment methods automatically apply to the gift card journey. Record what happens when someone wants ordinary products and a gift card in one visit. If shared checkout is essential, include it explicitly in the WooCommerce project scope.

3. Make the purchase and delivery choices understandable

Explain the value, the business accepting it and whether the buyer or another person receives the gift. Check the form with a long name, a short message and a small screen. A visible label should explain what each field needs; do not rely only on placeholder text.

W3C guidance on forms supports clear labels, instructions and understandable feedback. In your rehearsal, deliberately miss a required field and check that the correction is clear. Test the actual delivery options you plan to advertise rather than inferring them from a design mockup.

You can try the Podium Cards demonstration to explore the purchase fields and preview. It is a demonstration, not a live payment or an email sent to a recipient.

4. Settle the staff process before the first sale

A customer may spend part of the value and return later. Staff need to know how to identify the card, check the available balance and record only the amount used. Decide how the remaining bill is paid and who can help if the result is unclear.

Keep a single agreed record of the balance. A note in a booking diary is not a substitute for the system used to issue and redeem the card. Our gift card redemption and reconciliation guide covers the records to compare and how to handle an uncertain result.

5. Rehearse the awkward cases as well as the happy path

Use supplier-approved test arrangements. Check an incorrect recipient address, an unclear redemption result and a customer asking for help. Agree who can correct details and which changes need management approval. Keep the customer-facing conditions consistent across the website, purchase page and staff handover.

For a fictional restaurant adding cards before a seasonal promotion, the rehearsal might include a purchase on a phone, a scheduled gift and a partial spend at the venue. That is an example test plan, not evidence of a particular supplier feature or a completed client launch.

  • Check where the purchase starts and which business receives the payment.
  • Verify the delivery message and the instructions the recipient sees.
  • Rehearse balance checks, partial spending and an uncertain result.
  • Record the support contact and who approves corrections.

6. Launch with clear ownership

Keep responsibility for the website, gift card account and payment account visible to the business. Agree who checks customer queries, where sales and balance information can be found and how access would be handed over to a new manager.

Our restaurant gift card launch checklist expands the operating plan. If the existing website needs help before the card experience can be added, discuss website support as a separate piece of work.

Once the purchase journey works, our guide to promoting gift cards connects the gift page with your website, social content and customer touchpoints.

Common questions

Can Podium Cards be added to an existing WordPress website?

Yes, Podium can add the gift card experience to the existing site. Agree the placement and purchase journey first, including whether customers stay on the page or move to a branded shop.

Will gift cards automatically use my WooCommerce checkout?

Do not assume that. A linked or embedded gift card experience and a shared WooCommerce basket are different requirements. Confirm checkout, payment and discount behaviour in the proposal.

Can I test the idea before taking payments?

The Podium Cards page includes a browser demonstration. A production launch also needs supplier-approved testing of the actual purchase, delivery and redemption setup.
